Anger Management
Anger is a natural characteristic of any living being; however, it can turn out to be vicious if it is expressed in an inappropriate fashion. Anger management does not intend to diminish all the occurrence of anger itself since it is an impractical demand to do so as it is a very natural and inherent form of emotional expression. While expressing it in a correct way, an individual becomes able to facilitate himself better with the environment outside and establishes a balance in the intrinsic emotional level. So an ideal anger management technique does not aim at making you absolutely free from anger, rather it puts its effort in changing your emotional pattern and coping skills to interact with environmental stressors that are responsible for raising the anger level in an unhealthy pattern. Before going further on understanding anger management and its different techniques, we should focus our understanding the definition of anger and its different types.
Understanding Anger
Anger refers to the emotional expression comprising of annoyance, disapproval, resentment or antagonism. It is not always unhealthy. In fact, it is categorized under a necessary emotional expression that is an essential component for our survival. Anger comprises of different constituents:
Psychological Constituent: The psychological constituent of anger refers to the emotional content of anger or feeling such as sadness, gloom, dissatisfaction, or aggravation.
Physiological Constituent: The physiological constituent of anger refers to the way the body counters to the feeling of anger such as forming muscle tension, heightened blood pressure or racing heart since the adrenalin, the hormone responsible for ‘fight or flight’ phenomenon, secretion is taking place in the body.
Cognitive Constituent: The cognitive constituent of anger refers to the thinking content at the time of being angry such as understanding the ‘root’ of frustration, admitting being ‘getting on the nerves’ etc.
In essence, anger can be defined as a phenomenon that signifies a warning bell marking the wrong is happening in the environment. Anger is a natural expression against perceived threats.
